Residents from the Shirleor Court apartment complex in Goodwood are complaining about homeless people who steal the fence and vibracrete at the railway station.
According to one resident from the complex, Percy Vumazonke, who lives opposite the railway, the noise becomes unbearable, especially at night.
“They come from the soldier camp next to the N1, drunk and disruptive,” says Vumazonke.
Vumazonke says he reported it to the City but was slapped with“this is Prasa’s property”.
“The problem has been going on since last year. The place is becoming an eyesore,” says Vumazonke. “The fence is falling apart,” he adds.
Another resident said this occured ever since the squatters came to make lodging opposite in the parking. They have been a nightmare. “It’s been a back and forth between myself and the councillor, contractors, mayor’s office, and law enforcement since November last year,” she said.
Law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says the Goodwood Railway Station belongs to Prasa and would need to advise on what it is doing to safeguard the property or prevent criminal acts.
“From an enforcement perspective, the police is the primary agency responsible for crime prevention – the City’s services act in support of the police,” says Dyason.
He said residents are advised to report any acts of criminality that they witness to the police, on 10111, or to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
