United Reformed Church in Silversands to wait two more years for action from City of Cape Town

The congregation of the United Reformed Church in Silversands has to endure at least another two years of near-death experiences as they wait for the City of Cape Town to install traffic calming measures in front of the church.

The church is located next to Nooiensfontein Way and the exit way faces the busy road. Congregants, including the elderly and children, must cross the road to get to church.

Jeff Smith, a previous secretary of the church, started the quest for traffic calming measures back in 2015, but was eventually killed by a speading car while helping a sick congregant cross the road.

Ruben Cloete, a member of the church, is now spearheading the fight to get traffic calming measures. “We cannot wait until someone else dies on this road. We have been from pillar to post to get something done. Even if it is just a speed bump,” says Cloete.

TygerBurger asked the City of Cape Town for answers and the Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, says they are aware of the request.

“The City has approved a raised pedestrian crossing and two speed bumps in front of the church. These traffic calming measures are currently on a waiting list until funds become available. The ward councillor has indicated to the City that there is currently not enough ward allocation budget available for this project as funds have already been committed to other traffic calming projects over the next two years,” says Quintas.
