The City held a Job Connect Engagement at the Rocklands Civic Centre

A queue of hundreds of unemployed people snaked from inside the Rocklands Civic Centre right around the building from early this morning.

The mostly young people in the queue had come to join the City’s Jobs Connect programme at the civic centre on Wednesday 4 February..

Subcouncil 17 chair Elton Jansen explained: “This Jobs Connect outreach was to register unemployed youth on the database.”

In the queue was Matayo Solomons, a 21-year-old from Rocklands. He was battling to find work because everywhere he applied employers preferred taking on people with experience.

“I came here to see what I could do about that.” He added he was happy with how the engagement was progressing because before he even entered the main seated queue inside the main hall, he was given pamphlets about the opportunities available.

Help for small businesses

Jansen explained that at the engagement jobseekers could upload their CVs to the City’s system, which could then connect them with employment opportunities.

The engagement, though, was not solely for jobseekers. The City’s Business Hub was also available at the venue to offer help and registration opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

“The Business Hub is also present to assist and guide small businesses with whatever help they require,” Jansen said.

He said these services included help with tender applications, guides on how to do business with the City, helping with registration on the supply database and providing access to online webinars about marketing and growing a business.

Jansen said entrepreneurs could also get access to the Cape Town Entrepreneurship Academy, which assisted small, medium, and micro-enterprises (SMMEs).

Rocklands’ ward councillor Danny Christians said that unemployment was a “critical issue”

“Through Jobs Connect, the City encourages career development. It is envisaged that through practical, technical or academic intervention, when successfully applied, the process will contribute to the well-being of families and will economically contribute to a well-run City.”
