Dr Ricardo Smart says the unemployment rate in the area from which he hails encourages him to start hosting development workshops in order to help young people.
Smart says he was approached to host a workshop on creating a LinkedIn profile and interview skills and the overwhelming response after the workshop made him realise that more was needed.
“The professional development workshop series kicked off with CV writing, in which we transformed the traditional CV format into what the industry actually looks for. I am honoured to have been approached by Lance Johnson and the Evergreen Resource Centre in Austinville (Blackheath) again to host another interactive workshop next week to assist our youth in developing the skills and knowledge they need to succeed professionally,” says Smart.
Unemployment rate
Smart says the unemployment rate is so high, causing it to be extremely difficult to find a job when everyone is applying.
“A strong set of skills and an impressive CV are required to stand out from the crowd, but not everyone has access to the resources needed to develop skills and present themselves in the manner best suited for the industry. That is why I believe it is important to give back through professional development workshops, which have the potential to significantly improve the lives of those who attend.
“These services are often expensive for many people, particularly those living in underserved communities. A strong CV that better highlights the skills and experience increases their chances of landing an interview.
“Similarly, an interview skills workshop can teach you how to make a good first impression and stand out from the crowd. Therefore, hosting these workshops has a positive impact on the lives of the people in our community by fostering the development of critical skills, enhancing motivation and self-assurance, and strengthening our youth as a whole,” says Smart.
Smart says with workshops they are also looking to remove the fear factor when looking for a job.
“Finding work can be a stressful and demoralising experience, especially for those who have been unemployed for an extended period of time. People who attend these professional development workshops may find hope and encouragement in their job search. I’ll share my knowledge, resources, and more practical examples to help your LinkedIn profile stand out,” he says.
He says the sessions are open to anyone who believes they would benefit from the topics.
