UK woman missing after checking in for flight at Cape Town Airport


A 62-year-old woman checked in for her flight home to the United Kingdom, and then simply disappeared. More than three weeks passed before she was reported missing, and she has not been seen since.

Western Cape police are appealing for public assistance in locating 62-year-old Naomi Gaynor Bernes, who was last seen at Cape Town International Airport on April 20, and has not been found since.

According to provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Bernes checked in at airport to fly back to the United Kingdom but never boarded the aircraft. She was reported missing on May 12 by authorities in the United Kingdom, who had attempted to contact her without success.

The Western Cape Missing Persons Bureau is now leading the search and is urging anyone with information on Bernes’ whereabouts to come forward.

Members of the public who may have information are asked to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Yalande Van Der Merwe, at 082 411 3808, or to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Police have offered no further information regarding the investigation at this stage. TygerBurger has reached out to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for comment and is awaiting a response.
