The Sunshine Shop is open again.

The Tygerberg Hospice Sunshine Shop has reopened its doors at 16 Maree Street, Bellville, following a successful renovation made possible through community support.

The iconic shop, which has served as a community cornerstone since 1997, provides essential funding for the hospice’s free palliative care services to those in need.

“We are thrilled to see the shop looking better than ever,” said Robinlee Mitchell, community development manager of Tygerberg Hospice. “This renovation is not just a facelift; it’s a symbol of the community’s commitment to our cause. We’re proud to serve the community and provide essential services to those who need it most.”

The renovation has created a more welcoming and accessible space, featuring improved displays and a wider range of quality second-hand items including clothing, furniture and household goods.

Rev. Stephen Nicholson, chair of Tygerberg Hospice Board of Trustees, cut the ribbon at the reopening on Friday 27 March. “The shop is a vital part of the organisation,” he said. “The donations people bring and then the sale of everything really contributes a vast amount to making Tygerberg Hospice the success that it is. We look forward now with the revamp to greater, better things.”

Community spirit drives hospice mission

For years, volunteers, staff and donors have worked tirelessly to raise funds for the hospice’s vital work, with the shop remaining a beacon of hope and providing a sense of purpose to those involved.

“Our community has rallied around us, and we’re grateful for the outpouring of support,” said Lucille Mitchell, general manager of Tygerberg Hospice. “The Sunshine Shop is more than just a retail space; it’s a hub of compassion and kindness.”

The shop relies on community generosity to continue providing free palliative care services to patients and their families. With increased capacity following the renovation, the hospice aims to support even more individuals in need.
