On 28 February two pensioners from Goodwood lost all their possessions when their house burnt down.

This happened at 22 De Maas Avenue, Vasco, at the railway houses, where Edward Ives (76) and Brenda Ives (70) stayed.

Edward Ives, the owner of the house, was alone in the house when he discovered a fire in one of the bedrooms.

According to the accident report, it happened because of poor electrical wiring, where the connection was faulty.

“The fire was bad, with an estimated damages value of R500 000,” Wilma Matthee, a family member of the couple, says.

Three bedrooms, the roof, rafter’s ceilings, walls and floor are damaged and severed by the fire, heat, smoke and water.

According to Matthee, the married couple is a family of three children, two sons and one daughter.

“They are middle-class people, very humble and happily married and support each other day by day as an extremely helpful couple, loving and caring,” Matthee says.

The couple stays alone in the house where the accident happened, they are living with their two sons and daughter-in-law, living with them on the same property at the back.

“It looks bad, all valuables are unrepairable, that’s the concern,” Matthee says.

Matthee says the couple will appreciate any help from the public and community with daily basics, food, clothing and donations to rebuild their home.
