The organisers of the annual Cape Town Charity Toy Run are hard at work collecting toys for less-fortunate children, ahead of the 2026 festive season.

Bobby McGee, vice-chair of the Toy Run Trust, said it was currently reaching out to schools across the Cape Peninsula to help them collect unwanted toys to fill toy bags.

On Thursday 17 September Gene Louw Primary School in Stellenberg was visited and the first batch of toys were donated to the charity.

The Toy Run is an annual event carried out by the motorcycling community at the end of November.

“We collect thousands of new and pre-loved toys from members of the public at a gathering at Killarney International Raceway,” McGee said, “and there’s live music as well as various displays. The entry fee is bringing a toy, and people can enjoy festivities at 19 centres across South Africa, the sole aim being to hand them over to underprivileged children and charitable organisations in local communities, to bring joy to those in need during the Christmas season.”

This year, he said, they intend on visiting a number of primary schools to create awareness among learners about the work they do and encourage them to donate as many of their pre-loved toys as possible. “We will also be presenting an annual floating trophy to the school that collects and donates the most toys!”

The Toy Run Trust’s plan is to place cardboard collection boxes in classrooms and designated walkways where learners may deposit their pre-loved toys and other goods. It will collect these items at the end of November, sort them according to each charity’s specific needs, expressed on the wish list it provides, and distribute them in time for Christmas, according to McGee.
