The Federation of Dance, Drill, Cheerleading and Majorettes Western Cape held its third regional competition hosted by Durbanville Majorettes Club at Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein on Saturday 23 April.

More than 180 athletes participated.

Yvonne Viljoen, chair of the hosting club, says the pandemic-inflicted years saw the rise of a new national federation in this sport which hosted multiple competitions in 2020 and 2021 – some in person and some virtual.

The federation is also the first of its kind in South Africa to allow male competitors, says Viljoen, who is also vice-chair of the provincial federation.

“Durbanville Majorettes is a development team in their fourth year of competing. We have both a junior (primary school) and senior (high school) team.”

The club, based in Kraaifontein, has athletes from Aristea, Fanie Theron, Delft, Curro Durbanville, Curro Brackenfell and Meridian Pinehurst primary schools as well as from Brackenfell, Monument, and Meridian high schools, Viljoen says.
