The Table View police are urging the community to stay safe this festive holiday.
“The time is fast approaching when businesses are closing for the festive season and visitors from other parts of the country will be visiting our shores,” said Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler.
Surge in smash-and-grab
Last week TygerBurger reported (“Drivers be cautious”, 13 December) of a surge in smash-and-grab incidents on the N7, especially when approaching intersections along Potsdam Road in the Table View area.
Chandler said when people are driving and approach an intersection they must make sure their doors are locked and windows closed.
Goods such as handbags, cellphones and other valuables should be locked away in the boot.
“Avoid using your cellphone while stationary at an intersection, an increasing habit that leads to smash-and-grab incidents,” Chandler told TygerBurger.
She said when parking one’s vehicle in a public space, such as beaches, shopping centres and public roads, make sure all doors are locked (jamming devices can intercept the locking mechanism), and no valuable items are left inside.
Safety tips
Police share the following safety tips:
- Should you suspect you are being followed, drive around the block to confirm your suspicion, or drive to your nearest police station and wait for the suspicious vehicle to drive off. Reverse your vehicle in the driveway in order to have better observation of your surroundings.
- Always be in control of your property and do not leave your cellphone, purse or handbag unattended.
- Be alert and aware of your surroundings.
- When visiting the beach make sure your valuables are within your control. Children should be looked after by a responsible adult when at the beach.
- When you leave your home, make sure all doors are locked, windows closed and your alarm is activated.
- If you are a visitor to Table View make sure you know how to get to the police station or hospital in an emergency and save important numbers such as 107 and 10 111 to your phone or the police station 021 521 3300. Note that load shedding may impact the landlines, so it is advised to call 10111.
- Find out how you could join your local neighbourhood watch to become involved and follow their Facebook pages for regular updates on activities and crime awareness.
