A veld fire in Table View which clouded the area with thick smoke on Wednesday 8 June caused panic among residents of the suburb, as well as its surrounding areas.

However, several notices were issued by Table View Neighbourhood Watch that the fire is well under control, and residents need not worry.

“The fire started in a large section of reeds south of Gill Road in the Rietvlei section of Table Bay Nature Reserve. The fire spread across a vast area of the nature reserve, mainly in the direction of Theo Marais sports complex, also to the east in the direction of the R27,” said Joy Solomon, councillor of Ward 113.

By Thursday evening fire fighters successfully contained the blaze, minimising the risk of damages to humans and infrastructure.

“At approximately 14:00 on Friday, there were sudden gusts of wind which created flare ups,” according to Solomon.

“Emergency personnel containing the fire consisted of eight fire engines, three water tanks, four skid units, a hydraulic platform and approximately 60 emergency staff members,” said Solomon.

The cause of the fire is not yet confirmed, Solomon added.

As of Sunday, sudden flare ups occurred at the back of Greenfields, although a healthy distance from any infrastructure, which is successfully contained by emergency personnel, Table View Neighbourhood Watch wrote on social media.
