Kuils River Technical High School was recognised for an improved matric pass rate at the Western Cape’s annual National Senior Certificate (NSC) Awards Ceremony held at the Premier’s official residence, Leeuwenhof, on Thursday 29 January.

The school was among five honoured for “Improvement in pass performance” – specifically recognising public schools with 80 or more candidates that demonstrated the greatest increase in pass rates between 2024 and 2025, alongside growth in candidate numbers.

The school had 178 learners who wrote the NSC examinations last year and a 83,1% pass rate compared to 74% in 2024.

Interventions

Acting Principal Faldilah Koning attributed the improvement to strategic interventions implemented over recent years, particularly focusing on Grade 12 learner support in preparation for the NSC examinations.

“Key contributing factors to our improvement include the strengthening of academic monitoring and learner support systems,” Koning explained.

“We’ve implemented regular analysis of assessment data, targeted intervention programmes, and structured revision schedules for our matric learners.

“Teachers have increased the use of moderated common assessments and subject improvement plans, allowing for early identification of learning gaps and timely remediation.”

Support system

Additional support initiatives have included extra classes, holiday programmes, and after-school revision sessions, with particular emphasis on high-risk and gateway subjects. Learners have benefited from improved access to resources, including past examination papers, structured study guides, and teacher-led exam technique workshops.

Koning highlighted that enhanced collaboration between teachers, subject heads, and the school management team has ensured consistency in curriculum coverage and accountability.

“Increased parental communication and learner accountability measures have also contributed significantly to improved attendance, punctuality, and learner commitment, particularly in the senior phase,” she added.

Vision for excellence

Looking ahead, Koning outlined the school’s ambitious vision: “Kuils River Technical High School aims to develop into a high-performing, learner-centred technical institution that produces disciplined, skilled, and future-ready graduates.”

The school seeks to balance academic excellence with technical and vocational competence, ensuring learners are equipped for further education, training, and meaningful workforce participation.

“Through a culture of high expectations, continuous improvement, and inclusivity, we strive to become a centre of excellence where every learner is supported, challenged, and empowered to reach their full potential,” Koning said.
