With more rain to come and no proper stormwater infrastructure, large parts of Kraaifontein are set to see their roads and yards flooded once again this year.
For reasons unknown underground stormwater drains were never built in Windsor Park, Peerless Park North, East and West, and sections of Zoo Park, says Rhynhardt Bresler who became aware of the situation when residents contacted him after he became ward councillor in this area last year.
At the June subcouncil meeting held a fortnight ago, Bresler expressed his concern over this state of affairs.
“The streets in these areas are serviced only with above-ground half-round cement channels to direct the water. This system, already worn out, is not adequate to direct big volumes of water in a seasonal rainfall-area. Because the water is not channelled underground it flows into the yards, roads and sewer systems causing blockages and flooding. It is puzzling why it has not been addressed in a rate-paying area in over 30 years,” he explained to TygerBurger.
Bresler last year started pushing to have the City construct an underground stormwater system in the area, but is still awaiting answers as to why the project, which will take three to four years to complete, has been delayed by another three months.
“Planning on phase 1 of the project should have been completed by last year November The winter readiness programme received much attention, yet this project is hanging in the air,” he told TygerBurger.
According to Bresler phase 1 of the project is the modelling of the system, phase 2 the concept design and phase 3 the construction.
“This has become a big priority and I am pressuring officials to commence with the project as soon as possible. Promises were made by the City in writing for us to have answers by December,” he said.
