As the weather warms up and the days grow longer snake season is officially upon us. With reptiles becoming more active in search of food and mates it’s crucial for residents to be aware of their presence and understand how to co-exist safely.
Spring (September and October) is snake season, and as the temperature rises snakes leave their underground shelters in search of food.
Davine Sansom, a local snake handler says she is aware of many people that have a massive phobia when it comes to snakes.
- When you see a snake, the golden rule is to keep your eyes on the snake at all times. Follow it at a safe distance of 4-5 metres. Always keep your eyes on the snake.
- If found in your house, follow the snake. Stay at a safe distance.
- If found in a bathroom or bedroom, close the door and put a towel down at the bottom of the door to secure it. Go outside and close all windows.
- Never try and pick up a snake that you cannot identify.
- If someone is bitten by a snake try and keep as calm as possible and get to a hospital.
