Edison Solar PV (Pty) Ltd is proposing to construct and operate a solar PV farm. The site is located approximately 8km east of Durbanville within the City of Cape Town Municipality.
The Edison Solar PV Energy Facility development site is situated near Astral Foods (formerly County Fair Chicken). It is also near the planned Cape Winelands Airport, and approximately 5 kilometres east of Fisantekraal.
The development area is approximately 344ha on Portion 2 of the Farm Matjeskuil 733 and Portion 2 of the Farm Hercules Pilaar 1242.
The development includes a 150MW solar PV facility and an 800MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The project will utilise monofacial or bifacial PV modules with fixed, single-axis, or double-axis tracking mounting structures.
The solar panels, once installed, will reach a height of ~4m above ground level. The solar panels will be connected via below-ground cabling and connect to an on-site facility substation and BESS. PV panels are designed to operate continuously for over 20 years, mostly unattended and with minimal maintenance.
The electrical grid infrastructure (EGI) includes an on-site facility substation. Moreover, there is a 66kV overhead line to connect the project to the Eskom grid at the existing 66kV Joostenberg Substation. This substation is located immediately adjacent to the development area. The total line length is approximately 1km.
As the project has the potential to impact the environment, an Environmental Impact Assessment process is required. This process supports an application for Environmental Authorisation before the construction and operation of the PV Facility begin.
Other permits are also required to be secured, including, inter alia, rezoning and water use license.
How to participate in the process
It is in the interest of the public to participate in the public participation process. The sharing of information is the basis of this process.
It offers the opportunity for Interested & Affected Parties (I&APs) to become actively involved in the EIA process. They can also obtain information and share local knowledge with the team.
In order to accommodate the varying needs of I&APs within the surrounding area, various opportunities are provided to I&APs to submit their comments. This captures their views, comments, and concerns regarding this project.
