South Africa’s international arrivals surge as new air routes open

South Africa’s tourism sector is showing strong momentum, with international arrivals rising 12.8% in the first five months of 2026 to 4 220 586, compared to the same period last year.

The growth spans multiple markets, with African arrivals up 14.7% and European arrivals growing by 11.1%. In May alone, the country recorded 861 750 international arrivals, a 7.2% year-on-year increase, boosted by a 12.1% rise in overseas tourists. The United States led the overseas market with 41 846 arrivals in May, followed by the United Kingdom at 22 160.

Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille welcomed the figures, saying investment in infrastructure and improved access is paying off.

“These results affirm that our decision to invest in tourism infrastructure, improve ease of access and diversify our tourism offerings across the country is paying off. South Africa’s greatest competitive advantage lies in the combination of our people, our natural beauty, our rich heritage and our world-class infrastructure. Together, they continue to position our country as a destination of choice,” said De Lille.

Brazil leads Latin American surge

One of the standout growth stories is Brazil, where arrivals rose 40.6% in May, from 4 737 to 6 660 visitors.

The growth coincides with the launch today (2 July) of LATAM Airlines’ new non-stop service between Cape Town and São Paulo, operating three flights per week, which is expected to deepen ties between South Africa and Latin America.

“We are particularly encouraged by the strong growth from Brazil as LATAM Airlines prepares to launch its direct service between Cape Town and São Paulo. Every new air route creates new opportunities for tourism, trade and investment. This latest expansion is another vote of confidence in South Africa’s tourism market,” said De Lille.

Emirates expands Cape Town service

Cape Town’s air connectivity received a further boost yesterday (1 July) when Emirates added a daily flight on its Dubai route, bringing the total to three daily frequencies on the Dubai to Cape Town route. The new service is operated by the Airbus A350-900, featuring the airline’s latest onboard product.

According to Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, 117 000 two-way passengers travelled between Cape Town and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2025, representing 13% year-on-year growth and an increase of more than 50% since 2019.

Cape Town Air Access, powered by Wesgro, said the expansion would unlock access to high-growth markets across the Middle East, Asia and beyond through Dubai’s aviation hub.
