The drum majorette team from Soneike High School consisting of 24 athletes participated in the national championships held in Pretoria from 27 June to 3 July.
The team with eight Western Province athletes are proud members of the Federation of Dance, Drill, Cheerleading and Majorette Sport South Africa.
With hard work, tears, and dedication the team made themselves, their coaches, their parents, and the school proud.
They did not come back empty-handed.
Soneike High’s drummies are currently third-best in the country in military small drill.
The team also received first (non-prop group, flag group) and second (mini mace) places. In the mini open dance category the team achieved gold (only three teams competed but the score was high enough to be recognised as a top achievement).
In the solo sections Aiden Burke achieved first place in pom solo and second place in mace solo. Cameron Africa achieved first place in the flag solo, second in non-prop solo and third in mace solo.
Aiden and Cameron also achieved second place in the mace duo category.
Some of the athletes are from disadvantaged backgrounds in and around Kuils River.
For some, it was the first time going outside Cape Town, making it an even more wonderful experience.
All the athletes and their coaches, Amy Bougardt and Chantal Lombard, are very talented and dedicated to the sport.
Robyn Jooste, Saskia Cyster, and Zahraa Pederson were selected to represent South Africa at the International Association of Majorette Sport (IAM) World Championship in Agen, France from 13 to 23 July.
