The Senior Women’s Football Club, fondly known as the Soccer Grannies-Pinelands, is set to host its official launch as a non-profit company (NPC 2024/645888/08). This event marks a milestone for the club, celebrating resilience, fitness, and community engagement among a spirited group of women who are redefining what it means to be active in later life.
The launch will take place on Sunday 17 November, from 14:00 to 16:00 at the Thornton Bowling Club on Poplar Avenue, Thornton (adjacent to Grand West Casino). Yasmin Johnson, chair of the Senior Women’s Football Club, says the event will feature a special appearance by former Orlando Pirates player Gora Ebrahim.
Though the club has yet to play its first official match, the soccer grannies are already training hard for an exciting goal: competing in the Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) in April 2025 in Tzaneen.
Starting with only six members, two soccer balls, and a few cones, the club has since blossomed into a vibrant community of 24 women.
They meet every Sunday to play, improve their skills, and enjoy the camaraderie that the sport brings. “Our mission is to promote fitness, health, and cultural exchange among women from all walks of life,” Johnson explains. “Our two oldest members, both 75, truly embody the spirit of our organisation, proving that age is no barrier to staying active and joyful through sport.”
