Smart meters to be rolled out in Malibu Village.
Smart meters to be rolled out in Malibu Village.

Residents of Malibu Village in Blue Downs, get ready – smart meters are heading your way from Wednesday, 12 November.

The rollout is part of a bigger push to tackle load reduction in the area. Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa recently announced an ambitious plan to end load reduction within the next 12 to 18 months – and it could happen even sooner if communities get on board.

According to Eskom, these new smart meters are all about making life easier for residents. “The technology is already working in some areas, and now it’s Malibu Village’s turn.”

Expectations

So what can be expected? Residents will be able to check their electricity usage as it happens, get accurate bills (no more nasty surprises), and sort out most issues themselves online without having to queue at Eskom offices.”Smart meters will help customers monitor their electricity use in real time and manage their consumption better,” Eskom explained.

The utility says the meters will also mean fewer billing disputes and better service overall.

Smooth process

Eskom is asking residents to help make the installation process as smooth as possible. “Make sure the teams and contractors can easily and safely reach your meter box when they arrive. The smart meter programme is part of Eskom’s plan to modernise the electricity grid and improve the customer experience across the country.”
