The non-profit organisation Helping on purpose to empower (HOPE), is looking to collect 18 sewing machines for their Mandela Day project this year: Sewing for Sarepta.

HOPE would like to give back to the youth by reviving crucial skills to become independent young adults.

Their goal is to have 18 sewing machines by Mandela Day, Monday 18 July.

Wayne Rhode of HOPE says they are partnering with Sarepta High School for this project.

“We want to empower our youth to work with a needle, to replace a lost button, to fix torn clothing or even create their own designs – creating more room for self-developed income and allowing more control over their future.”

They are calling on any individual, organisation or business that has sewing machines that are no longer in use and who would like to bring about change in vulnerable communities to donate.

Sewing classes will be offered on a Saturday at the school starting with the learners.
