The residents of Sewende Laan informal settlement in Strandfontein received toilets last week. On Thursday August 28, Ward councillor Elton Jansen handed over refurbished shipping containers housing 10 flush toilets to the informal settlement.
The toilets are housed in two blocks with cubicles connected to modular on-site treatment plants. The wastewater will be recycled into germ-free reusable water, through a combination of biological and electro-chemical processes.
The treated water is then reused for flushing, eliminating the need for bulk sewer connections and making the system well-suited for areas with limited infrastructure. The Sewende Laan settlement, situated just off Spine Road, is home to about 50 households.
Construction of the facilities began in March this year and included the temporary employment of six local residents.
According to the City, the initiative followed extensive community engagement that started in 2024 to ensure that residents supported the project.
Officials say the new toilets will improve sanitation while also introducing sustainable water-use technology to one of Strandfontein’s smaller informal communities.
Jansen said the project represents an important step in delivering innovative, dignified sanitation solutions to communities in need.
