The Senior Women Football Club, proudly known as the Soccer Grannies-Pinelands, a non-profit company, was officially launched on Sunday 17 November. This joyful event celebrated the spirit of resilience and unity among an inspiring group of women who are proving that staying active and connected has no age limit.
“The event was a wonderful celebration of community, unity, and empowerment for senior women,” says Dr Marietta Hopley, the team’s vice-chair.
Shireen Petersen, a dedicated team member, shared how she joined the soccer grannies through her friend Jasmin from Thornton. “I would describe the team as excellent, with great communication,” she said. “We always have fun while playing soccer. Petersen noted the club’s remarkable growth, starting with just six players and now boasting a team of 26 enthusiastic women.”

For Anthea Feintuch from Kuils River joining the team was a way to stay fit and set an example for her three grandchildren. “I’m still a ‘young’ granny, so I need to be a role model,” she explained. She described the team as dynamic, energetic and wonderfully diverse, adding “we’re one big happy family.”
Proactive approach to resolving challenges
Coach Joanne Solomons shared her pride in the team’s progress. “The highlight for me is meeting the most wonderful grannies. Their respect, love and hard work are truly inspiring,” she said. Solomons emphasised the team’s commitment to supporting one another, with doctors providing medical guidance and a proactive approach to resolving challenges like transport.
“I love what I do. Seeing how much they learn and improve keeps me motivated to be with them.”
By “embracing the spirit of Ubuntu” the team invites all women aged 50 and above to join the Soccer Grannies. “Whether single, divorced, widowed, a seasoned soccer player or a curious beginner, it welcomes you with open arms,” said Hopley.
