Four suspects were arrested after a dramatic foot chase following the panic alarm activation.

Quick thinking by private security officers led to the arrest of four suspected armed robbers who attempted to target customers at an Engen fuel station in Sonnedal.

The incident unfolded when a panic alarm was activated at Engen Sonnedal, with reports indicating that a group of suspects were attempting to rob customers and were allegedly armed with a firearm.

Zonewatch Armed Response officer Allen Siems was first to respond to the emergency call, immediately making contact with staff members on site who confirmed the gravity of the situation. Backup arrived swiftly in the form of officer Shaun Siems.

Dramatic chase ensues

As officers arrived, the suspects were spotted fleeing the scene along Plattekloof Road, sparking a foot pursuit through the area. The coordinated response proved effective, with three of the four suspects successfully apprehended during the chase.

However, the fourth suspect proved more elusive, attempting to evade arrest by hiding in bushes along the N1 highway and changing his clothing to avoid detection.

“With the assistance of the Flying Squad, the suspect was located, arrested, and positively identified,” according to the security company’s statement on Facebook.

All four suspects were subsequently taken into custody and handed over to Parow police.

The incident highlights the effectiveness of rapid response protocols and demonstrates the value of cooperation between private security companies and the police in combating crime.

Zonewatch emphasized that the successful operation showcased “the importance of rapid response, high visibility, and strong cooperation between private security and police.”

No injuries were reported during the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
