An attempted armed robbery by nine men at Kraaifontein Superspar and Spar’s Tops liquor store was foiled by two security officers last night (Tuesday 2 May).
An armed response officer from SJC Security was busy closing the doors at Spar Tops just after 20:00 when the robbers struck.
Charl du Toit, managing director at SCJ Security in Brackenfell told TygerBurger today (Wednesday 3 May) that four men then confronted the security officer.
“Four armed men confronted him in front of the locked doors and lead him away to the main store with three guns held to his head. He managed to break free and run ahead to the main store, where he yelled, ‘Armed robbery in progress!’”
The four suspects had already started running for one of the getaway cars, a Volkswagen Polo.
Another five robbers, who were in the main store, were frightened by the officer’s alarm, as customers and staff started running to the back of the store.
However, mere moments before this, another SJC officer entered the store, and she too was held at gunpoint.
“Bewildered, and before they could take anything, the robbers let go of the security officer, ran out of the store and fled the scene in another Volkswagen Polo in the direction of Wallacedene,” Du Toit explained.
Only minutes after they fled, other response units from SJC arrived at the store at 20:06.
Kraaifontein police, who also responded, arrived at the scene to investigate.
According to Du Toit, no shots were fired nor was anybody injured and applauded the valour the two officers displayed.
“They put their lives on the line for others and prevented a robbery with their swift actions.”
