The Bishop Lavis community has a new destination for handcrafted goods and artisanal flair after the School of Skills Bishop Lavis launched the Bishops Magic Skills Shop, a vibrant space dedicated to showcasing the talent, grit and craftsmanship of students from the school’s various vocational workshops.
Hard work
The shop is the culmination of months of hard work across several departments, says Mario Oostendurp, a teacher at the school and one of the driving forces behind the project. “Together with theoretical exercises, learners have been busy creating high-quality, ‘market-ready’ products that demonstrate a mastery of their respective trades. Visitors to the shop will find a diverse range of items that reflect the school’s comprehensive curriculum,” he says.
According to Oostendurp, you can buy from sturdy furniture pieces to intricate metalwork. “The technical workshops have produced functional items built to last. From the sewing and arts classes, there are unique textiles, garments, and decorative pieces that offer a creative touch for the home. The hospitality shop also serves as a platform for the culinary talents of the hospitality students, featuring various treats and baked goods,” he says.
Behind the scenes
Behind the scenes, the administrative and retail side of the shop provides Office Practice students with real-world experience in stock management, customer service, and point-of-sale operations. “The goal of the Magic Skills Shop is to bridge the gap between learning a trade and entering the economy. When a student sees a product they made being purchased by a member of the public, it builds a level of confidence that a classroom grade simply cannot match. The initiative also promotes sustainability, with many workshops utilising donated materials and recycled wood to create their inventory. This circular approach teaches students the value of resources while keeping the products affordable for the community,” explains Oostendurp.
He invites all residents to stop by, browse the collection, and support the next generation of South African artisans. “Every purchase goes directly back into supporting the workshops and the development of the learners.”
