Cosmas Makunde from Parklands with some of his artworks.

Cosmas Makunde, a retired junior school art teacher from Parklands, entered eleven artworks in the May-June exhibition of the Blaauwberg Art Society at the Stodels Garden Centre in Milnerton after seeing the article about the art society in TygerBurger on Wednesday 11 May.

The exhibition concluded on Monday 20 June.

“Joining Blaauwberg Art Society is going to be enriching with interaction with artists, participating in plein air excursions, demonstrations of specific art skills and group exhibitions. My painting media are oil, watercolour and sometimes incorporating mixed media for texture and relief. I have some drawings in ink and pen. I am exploring landscapes, figures and abstracts. Figurative abstracts are quite uplifting and this is my first time exhibiting,” says Makunde.

His art resources are basic and he has the minimum brushes and paint.

“Canvas is quite limiting and not having the money to buy I made an easel and also cardboard tables and storage shelves. I would like to make my own canvases and hopefully frames too and maybe after the exhibition someone can assist in me achieving my goals,” he says.

First Thursday Gallery openings have given him wide interaction with galleries and artists.

“I have yet to make an impression on galleries and will keep my eyes set on them. Hopefully the exhibition will set the ball rolling.

I am passionate about creating artefacts from found objects and wood sculpture. With space permitting, I would go into furniture too. I am starting to be a full-time artist and joining the art society. Who knows what the future holds,” Makunde says.
