Residents in Table View and surrounding areas took to social media this week, voicing their concerns after noticing a huge flare at the oil refinery on Koeberg Road, Milnerton.
Apart from the flare, a strong smell of fumes also originating from the refinery was noticeable in the air, both last night and this morning (4 June).
A statement was issued on Wednesday 3 June by Astron Energy in which it explained the reasons.
“The refinery experienced a process unit upset, which led to visible emission from the elevated flare as safety systems activated. As a result, there may be increased noise and visible emissions from the flare as we stabilise the process unit.”
Astron apologised for the inconvenience caused and said it appreciated the community’s understanding as they work to safely restore normal operations.
