Flamingo Vlei residents are being commended for their quick thinking and vigilance after several small fires broke out in the open grass areas around the suburb last week.

According to the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW), between two and three separate fires were reported in the Flamingo Vlei area over the past two days. Thanks to fast reporting from residents — many of whom spotted smoke on CCTV cameras — the blazes were contained before they could spread to nearby homes.

“This is exactly why community awareness matters,” said Laura Outhet, spokesperson for TVNW. “We’re entering fire season, and early detection is key. Residents who act quickly are helping to prevent what could easily become a much more serious situation.”

Community steps up

Neighbours in the area have been praised for their teamwork and calm response during the incidents.

“We’ve lived here for 15 years, and every summer the risk returns,” added Mark Jonas from Parklands. “People walking dogs or jogging along the green belts should always keep an eye out — even a small spark can turn dangerous.”

“Our neighbours all message each other when something’s spotted,” said Sunningdale resident Karen du Toit. “It’s that community spirit that keeps us safe.”

Authorities monitoring the situation

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service and Table View police have confirmed they are aware of the fires and are monitoring local conditions closely as fire season begins.

Residents are urged to remain alert, especially those living near open fields or green belts in Table View, Flamingo Vlei, Sunridge, Parklands, Sunningdale, and Bloubergstrand.

Anyone spotting smoke or fire is advised to contact:

  • City of Cape Town Emergency: 107 (from landline) or 021 480 7700 (from cellphone);
  • Milnerton Fire Department: 021 400 6949;
  • Table View Neighbourhood Watch: 084 383 1814 and
  • Table View Police Station: 021 521 3338.

With warmer, drier weather settling in, officials are urging the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary calls.

“Please only report fires when you can see flames or smoke,” Outhet said. “We’ve already had a few false alarms caused by panic. Accurate information helps emergency teams respond quickly and effectively.”
