Residents in Cape Town suburb ‘furious’ about the rubbish being dumped at their back door

This dumping starts from Heldersig Road alongside the canal towards the station side.

Thornton residents are fed-up with dumping which is happening at their back door.

According to Maryanne Jordaan the canal has been looking like a dumping site for a long time.

“We do not know who is responsible for scattering the rubbish, but some of the rubbish and other things belong to a few people who sleep under the bridge by the station,” Jordaan says.

And more people are gaining ground in Thornton, which we suspect comes from Epping Market, she adds.

Illegal dumping

This dumping starts from Heldersig Road alongside the canal towards the station side.

“On numerous occasions, we have emailed Riad, the ward councillor, again this morning (Sunday 18 December).

“There is supposed to be a Thornton Clean Up that happens, but the canal is always looking like this, and it is getting worse,” Jordaan said.

Jordaan stated that even the grass is still not cut on the canal.

“We are furious.”

“Pinelands always seems to get their issues fixed, but Thornton is left,” Jordaan said.

According to the City of Cape Town, illegal dumping is the depositing, discharging, spilling, or releasing of any kind of waste in or on any public space. This includes waste that is loose or in boxes, barrels, or bags.

“Although we have several waste management strategies and services in place for dealing with all types of waste, we have a dumping problem in Cape Town. It is one of the biggest challenges the City faces. It is expensive, damages our environment and is harmful to ourselves and our animals,” the City says.
