I want to say, we are in total agreement with the letter by “Concerned” from Oakdale published last week (“Urgent appeal for action on prostitution in Oakdale“, TygerBurger 20 August).
From our side, I also want to say well done to TygerBurger for paying attention to our plea.
Your reporting is important, as this matter has become deeply concerning to many of us who live and work here.
Oakdale was once a peaceful, beautiful neighbourhood. Sadly, we are watching it go backwards as our streets are now being used for prostitution and other illegal activities.
This is unacceptable, and we as residents cannot simply take this lying down. We report these issues daily, yet the problem seems to be escalating rather than being addressed.
Prostitution is not only a public nuisance, but it also brings with it serious consequences — ranging from crime, drug abuse, and violence to the exploitation of vulnerable women. It destroys the sense of safety within our homes and community, leaving families feeling exposed and helpless.
The presence of illegal buildings and sex trade operations in our homes is a direct threat to the integrity of our neighbourhood. If certain areas have been identified as hotspots, then urgent and visible action should be taken.
As “Concerned” from Oakdale wrote — Oakdale deserves better. We need the cooperation of police, law enforcement, and the municipality to protect our community from this growing danger.
The community is taking a stand and demanding that our neighbourhood be restored to the safe, decent place it once was.
Who knows, should we consider phoning Carte Blanche, or a peaceful protest in the streets, maybe then somebody will take us seriously.
Fed Up, Oakdale
