Soon we will celebrate Mandela day, and as journalists, we often get invited to too many events for one person to manage. It becomes a tug and pull with so many unable to understand that we just do not have the capacity. This demonstrates the sheer volume of people doing good. This cannot be denied or frowned upon.
But, this has me wondering about how we as South Africans actually see this day and embrace the sense or essence on Mandela.
For many, the day symbolises giving back for 67 minutes, but how many of us continue this more regularly beyond this day? It is not always financially feasible – I suppose would be the argument, but things like small acts of kindness rarely cost more than a smile, or mere moment of your time.
Mandela taught us about this, but maybe we forget that in the hustle of trying to do our part for this day. But, let us remember, there are 364/5 other days we can still bring a change.
