The City of Cape Town has reached a key milestone in its MyCiTi Phase 2A construction project, with the first red MyCiTi bus lanes laid along AZ Berman Drive.
The upgrade of AZ Berman Drive, including its dedicated bus lanes, is nearing completion. A final traffic switch along the road is planned for Friday 26 June.
The completed route will connect commuters to the southern suburbs and the city centre.
Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, said the long-running project is on track.
“I want to thank all residents and businesses in the vicinity for their patience with this long-term project. I can assure you that once we start seeing these red bus lanes being cast, the end is in sight. There is light at the end of this tunnel in the form of a safe, reliable, affordable and efficient bus service with dedicated lanes to reduce travel times; new stations; new stops and upgraded infrastructure. This project is a major part of our strategy to keep Cape Town moving. The project is on track and if all goes according to plan, most of the work is to be completed during the course of this year, with some minor works scheduled for February 2027,” said Quintas.

What road users can expect on 26 June
The traffic switch will take place between the BP petrol station and the Mitchells Plain Police Station. Traffic will move from the current northbound lane – heading towards Cape Town – to the newly completed southbound lane heading towards Mitchells Plain.
Vehicles travelling in both directions will use two lanes in each direction. Traffic cones and road markings will be put in place to separate the lanes and guide drivers safely through the construction area.
Broader upgrades for the area
People living and working along AZ Berman Drive can look forward to a wider set of improvements that will breathe new life into the area. These include:
- updated street signs;
- new and improved street lighting;
- landscaping;
- stormwater drainage upgrades;
- technology and ducting infrastructure;
- road markings and
- traffic signal upgrades.
Work already done
Several construction milestones have already been reached along AZ Berman Drive:
- Widening at the eastern bridge where AZ Berman Drive meets the R300 has largely been completed, with final touches currently under way.
- The foundations for the future MyCiTi Sesame and Marguerite closed median stations are complete, with finishing work and testing now in progress.
- The foundations for the open median stations near the Sesame and Marguerite Street intersections are done. The station near the Kerrem Street intersection is 70% complete.
The final phase of the project involves building a dedicated path for pedestrians and cyclists along the eastern side of AZ Berman Drive. This is planned for completion in February 2027, if all goes according to plan.
