Kraaifontein Industria truck standoff: Public participation over Acacia Road starts

The proposed plan to convert Acacia Road in Kraaifontein Industria

Embattled business owners and road users have until 27 September to share their views on the City of Cape Town’s proposal to convert Acacia Road in Kraaifontein Industria into a permanent one-way road in a clock direction.

This proposal by the City’s urban mobility directorate follows a years-long battle escalating in a petition to authorities to come up with a solution for the road blockages caused by heavy trucks that fill up at the Diesel depot in Acacia street.

The intention of the plan is to improve traffic flow in the area during peak traffic periods to ensure access to businesses.

“Traffic congestion is having an impact on businesses that depend on walk-in trade with access to properties being currently restricted,” the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas.

He invites role players to actively participate in the public participation process that kicked of last Monday, by sharing their views and expertise on the proposed conversion.

In terms of the Municipal systems act the public and interested parties or groups are given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations, or input on the proposed plans.

“Officials will collate, and asses all input prior to moving forward with this proposal,” adds Quintas.

TygerBurger‘s reporting dating back to 2020 outlines the current dilemma that threatens the very viability of the industrial area as a place of business due to trucks blocking this entry road into the area at least twice a week, negatively affecting 71 parties.

In a recent standoff, tensions were high between local businessman and truck drivers who blocked entrances preventing staff from going home. (“Heated clash over trucks” TB -7/08).

After this incident business owner Hannes Rheeder told TygerBurger that the situation is untenable.

“Everybody is frustrated and anger boils over every time this happens. We are fed up and truck drivers are becoming threatening when you approach them. It is only a matter of time before violence break out,” he said.
