Fire and emergency services investigate a gas odour at the Promenade Mall.

Streams of early-morning shoppers gathered outside the Promenade in Beacon Valley this morning after a section of the mall was closed and evacuated.

Rumours of a gas leak quickly spread on social media, but mall management assured shoppers that the evacuation was only a precaution and there was no danger.

Entrance four was closed for just under an hour this morning (25 July) shortly after the mall opened because a gas odour was detected in the Food District Area.

The mall’s marketing manager, Chezelle Kroon, said the entrance was reopened at just before 10 and the area has been declared safe.

No one was injured, she said.

The odour was detected at 07:20, well before the mall’s opening time at 09:00.

“As a precautionary measure, this section of the mall was evacuated,” Kroon said. “Emergency services, including the fire and gas services department, responded swiftly and conducted a thorough assessment of the affected area. The investigation revealed that there is no cause for concern and the area has been declared safe. Centre management would like to reassure all shoppers, tenants and staff that your safety remains our top priority,” Kroon said. The mall is open and trading as usual, she said.
