The Elsies River Community Centre is described as “a precious gem located in one of the most vulnerable places in the Western Cape, but a place with people who have the most beautiful hearts”.

Letitia Fisher, spokesperson for the centre, says it makes a huge difference in the community.

“Currently we are offering academic programmes and soft skills, but we aim to offer skill programmes that will enable our students to apply those skills and become employable and generate an income. This however is only possible if we have entrepeneurs and businesses within our community and surrounding areas that are willing to reach out and partner with us,” says Fisher.

Fisher says they also aim to spread the information regarding the centre as far and wide as possible so that youth and adults who are in need of these programmes can register and attend the classes.

“Nelson Mandela said it is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine; that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. We want everybody to have the chance to change their life, that is why we start with basic reading, writing and numeracy classes, equivalent to primary school level.

“There are older people in the community who for some or other reason never went to school and we give them the chance here. Everyone from age 16 and up is welcome,” says Fisher.
