A court order has been obtained by the City of Cape Town to protect the land earmarked for the Potsdam Sustainability Campus.
The area is being used by vagrants for several years now, despite efforts by City officials to remove them.
The Potsdam Sustainability Campus is an initiative of the City’s urban sustainability unit and will be housed on the same site which forms part of the historic Potsdam Outspan located near to the present-day Potsdam, Koeberg and Blaauwberg Road intersection.
The campus will include a bus terminus, taxi rank, stables, urban agriculture and market to mention a few.
Roxanne Moses, Subcouncil 3 manager, told councillors at a meeting held at the council chambers of the Royal Ascot Municipal Building in Bridle Way in Milnerton last week that the area is occupied by illegal land invaders. The court order will now allow for an eviction process to proceed by the asset owner. The land in question is owned by the department of human settlements, she said.
Moses said the property is completely fenced off.
The project can now commence, she said, adding that consultants are already on-site doing assessments.
The matter was also discussed at a recent meeting held with all role-players and City officials, she said.
Joy Solomon, councillor for Ward 113 which includes Killarney Gardens, Table View and Parklands, mentioned that the removal of the invasive Port Jackson is also important.
The Subcouncil meeting was held on Thursday 16 February. The next meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday 16 March.
