Goodwood Rugby Club is fed up with the potholes in the parking lot and bad service they have been receiving from the City of Cape Town.
This came after multiple complaints, a pothole wrecked parking lot and vandalism and no response from the councillor in the Goodwood area.
According to Joanne Neethling, Deputy Chair of the United Independent Movement Western Cape Regional Committee, on 18 May she emailed various heads in the City of Cape Town regarding parking areas that need upgrading.
Eventually, on 23 May, she received a response with reference numbers. Now, a month later, there is still no feedback nor have any repairs been done.
In addition, on 8 and 9 June, Goodwood Rugby Club was a victim of vandalism in which all cables & DB Boards at various supply points were stolen.
This caused the teams to not have their normal evening practise as there were no lights on the field.
Goodwood Rugby Club has emailed various “heads of departments” in the City of Cape Town as this is part of their grounds and falls under the recreation & parks – sports department.
“Firstly, we had to keep following up as no one responded immediately, secondly, we were told the City of Cape Town does not have funds and it must be discussed in the next budget meeting for next year.”
The club had to try and raise funds to get some lights sorted so that they can still have their league games and that the teams can practise.
“The ward councillors have not even made any contact to hear or follow up!” Neethling said.
She fumed, “What is the City of Cape Town spending their money on? Why can they not assist future leading rugby player’s clubs with repairs?
“Just before voting, they will advertise ‘The City that works for you’!”
According to Councillor Patricia van der Ross, Mayco member for community service and health, the City of Cape Town is aware of the electrical infrastructure repair work at the Goodwood Sports facility that was vandalised in June.
The recreation and parks department is in the process of addressing all repairs and maintenance which was anticipated to be completed before July, subject to weather conditions.
According to van der Ross, the potholes in the parking area will be filled and made safe for use to meet minimum standards.
The revamping of the entire tar area requires major resources and will be prioritised based on the availability of funding and City priorities.
- The Goodwood Sports facility is open for usage and bookings can be made through the area office on 021 444 0916, alternatively 021 400 6054.
