Pothole repair work and resealing in parts of Ward 1 (Panorama, Plattekloof, Sonnendal, Kleinbosch, Monte Vista and Welgelegen) are complete or nearing completion, a representative of the City of Cape Town’s urban mobility said last week.
Councillors were discussing the report on the structured programme on pothole repair work, as well as the programme on road resealing for Subcouncil 3 at a meeting last week, where information on the progress in Ward 1 was shared.
The purpose of the report is to inform subcouncil of the roll-out programme and status of the structured pothole repair programme, along with the resealing programme within urban mobility: road infrastructure management department.
Official, contractor walk each street
Breán Esterhuysen, a department representative, told councillors pothole repairs are still underway in Monte Vista, but that Panorama had been completed, adding that they are 90% through the process of completing 1 700 squares of road. “We should be able to complete this and then move to Edgemead,” he said.
Miquette Temlett, councillor for Ward 5 (Edgemead and Bothasig), wanted to know how the department chooses the roads and suburbs that need repair work as there are still a few roads in Bothasig that are pothole riddled and in Edgemead there are also quite a few roads that need work done as well.
“We log service requests, but we do not see them fixed as quickly as we would want to have them fixed,” she explained.
Esterhuysen said a representative of the City of Cape Town and the contractor will physically walk every single street, and mark out all the potholes that need to be worked on.
“If there is a road with too many potholes that road would be put on a priority list or wish list as we call it. In the next financial year, we will try and do the whole road,” Esterhuysen explained.
Roads in Bothasig still need work
Temlett said in Bothasig, Boom Street needs work done. She added that these are not new potholes, but rather old ones. “In Letchworth Drive in Edgemead you feel like you are going over a speedbump,” she said.
Esterhuysen said their department will walk each street in Edgemead as well.
He requested councillors to send C3 notifications to their depots, as well as to their department, to add these roads to their wish list.
Cheryl Visser, councillor for Ward 1, said the conditions of the roads in her ward was high on the list at a recently held community meeting.
She said though repair work is nearly 100% done in Monte Vista, they experience big issues in other suburbs such as Kleinbosch where the roads are “crumbling”.
She also reminded residents to log a C3 notification to have a pothole repaired.
Esterhuysen said 1 700 squares of road will be covered in this term contract which runs until the end of December.
“It can go quickly, but we are limited by funds,” he said.
