Lentegeur police have warned residents to be vigilant after a spate of robberies in Colorado Park and Mandalay.
Lentegeur spokesperson, Constable Navon van Houten, said there has been an increase in common robberies in those areas.
“The community is urged to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activities to their local police station,” he said.
Meanwhile, there have been significantly less reports of shootings last week.
According to neighbourhood watch groups, there were at least four shootings last week, none of which appear to be fatal.
Police have not responded to TygerBurger’s request to confirm this, however, Western Cape MEC of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, congratulated police for seizing several firearms.
Marais said: “Over the past three weeks, more than 18 illegal firearms were taken off the streets of Cape Town in communities severely affected by ongoing gang-related violence.
“Notably, officers recovered a rifle near the scene of a recent mass murder in Gugulethu. Further firearm confiscations took place in areas such as Philippi East, Crossroads and Hanover Park with nine firearms being confiscated in Mitchell’s Plain in less than three days. Ongoing intensified operations in Mitchell’s Plain also led to the Saps Anti-Gang Unit confiscating two more firearms along with ammunition on Thursday 10 July,” she said.
She added that most of the recent weapons seizures were as a result of tip-offs from residents.
“I applaud the bravery of these residents who are taking a stand against criminals. I urge communities to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities and illegal firearm possession. It is only through collaboration that we will be able to rid our communities of crime,” she said.
