Around 20 000 spectators gathered at the Cape Town DHL Stadium on Saturday 13 December to witness history as the first-ever World Supercross event held in Africa crowned new world champions in a thrilling season finale.
The South African Grand Prix served as the final stop of the five-round FIM World Supercross Championship, with individual and team titles decided in an enthralling night of racing that brought the sport to a new audience.
Anderson claims SX1 title in spectacular fashion
Jason Anderson emerged as the 2025 SX1 World Supercross Champion after a decisive performance that saw him dominate throughout the evening. Facing intense pressure from rivals Joey Savatgy and Christian Craig – who entered the South African GP separated by just a single point – Anderson showed remarkable consistency and pace when it mattered most.

The crowd favourite was undoubtedly the thrilling battle between Americans Anderson and Savatgy in the SX1 class.
In the final race, Savatgy led early but Anderson chased relentlessly. There were collective gasps from the crowd as the riders swapped positions, nearly colliding.

Anderson pounced in spectacular fashion to finally take the lead in the last couple of laps, securing not just the race win but his first World Supercross Championship. He finished the season five points ahead of Savatgy in the overall standings after winning both sprint races and the main event.
Anstie secures SX2 crown as Honda takes team title
In the SX2 class, British rider Max Anstie secured the 250cc world title despite Shane McElrath (USA) taking multiple race wins on the night in Cape Town.
While McElrath won the SX2 event, Anstie’s season-long consistency and solid finishes were enough to secure his second SX2 world title. The British rider finished as runner-up behind McElrath, a performance that solidified his place at the top of the final standings.

The team championship concluded with Quad Lock Honda taking the title, continuing its strong performance throughout the 2025 season. The Australian-based outfit accumulated key points thanks to competitive outings from riders in both SX1 and SX2 classes, including regular podium finishes and overall consistency.
There was plenty of excitement throughout the evening as the world’s best riders went head-to-head in three races for each class, with fans inside DHL Stadium witnessing competitive racing, tight battles for position and the culmination of championship aspirations across all classes.
The event marked a significant milestone for the sport, successfully bringing World Supercross to the African continent and closing the 2025 season on a high note with world-class entertainment for the Cape Town crowd.
