Pet owners should be aware that owning a dog, or two, carries a responsibility of not only feeding and loving, but taking them out for regular walks and exercise.

My brother lives in Milnerton Ridge, where two of his neighbours have dogs. They can bark, continuously, against the quiet backdrop of the area. Security was contacted whereupon one owner was spoken to and asked to calm the dogs down and keep them from disturbing neighbours’ peace and quiet.

The City has a bylaw against noisy dogs, however, even after the neighbour was spoken to by security the dogs continue barking and making unsettling disturbing noise – sometimes even till 22:00.

My brother was not the only that complained about the barking. Others in his complex also complained, even shouting over the wall: “please shut the dogs up”.

The home owner came to see who was shouting at his dogs. After coming to my brother’s house and noticing his son at the door, he made an effort to “klap” my brother’s son, when recognising him at a local shopping centre.

He even tried to scare him on the road while he drove past my nephew, near the same shopping centre, which resulted in my nephew’s car getting smacked and needing panel beating in excess of R10 000.

Needless to say, there has been no intervention and his dogs still bark to this day.
