A 54-year-old resident from Parow North claims that she was abused while being treated at the Karl Bremer Hospital in Mike Pienaar Drive in Bellville.
Shireen Ryklief, the patient, told TygerBurger she developed bedsores while being treated at the facility.
She was admitted to the hospital on Monday 10 April and discharged on Saturday the 22nd, after which she was admitted to a private hospital for further treatment.
Claims that three nurses abused her
“I was in a coma for four days. When I woke up I realised I had bedsores. It was bad.”
Ryklief claimed she was abused by three nursing staff members while being treated for the bedsores. “I was thrown onto the bed with the bedsores. This is when I realised things would not get better.
“The doctor looked me over on the Friday and said I am doing wonderfully, that the bedsores are healing wonderfully well. He said nothing was wrong. I was in pain.”
Since being admitted to the private facility in Gatesville, Athlone she had undergone four surgeries including plastic surgery. She has been there for the past month now where doctors informed her that she had an abscess for which she had four operations to date, she says.
Health department issues apology
TygerBurger approached the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness for comment regarding the alleged abuse at Karl Bremer Hospital.
“We are very sorry to hear of Ms Shireen Ryklief’s experience at our facility and have engaged her to discuss her experience and treatment plan,” said Shimoney Regter, department spokesperson.
“We view this matter in a serious light and are engaging hospital management to ensure we identify areas of improvement and take corrective measures where necessary. This includes engagement with staff to emphasise compassionate client care and training to improve services. We remain open to engagement with Ms Ryklief.”
