Parents urged to add their comment to Milnerton Primary School’s traffic plan

Residents and parents with children at Milnerton Primary School now have the opportunity to comment on the conversion of roads surrounding the school from a two-way directional traffic flow into a one-way road system.

The one-way will improve traffic circulation past the school during peak hours.

Additional road works will make provision for on-street parking bays after complaints were received regarding the traffic congestion around the school.

Fabian Ah-Sing, councillor for Ward 55, says the solution to the concerns raised were tabled and after an extensive process, the City of Cape Town and the subcouncil have agreed on the following upgrades to be presented to the community as possible solutions:

  • Convert Langerman Avenue to a one-way street from Arum Way to Begonia Street;
  • Convert Begonia Street to a one-way street from Langerman Avenue to Graaff Avenue;
  • Convert Graaff Avenue to a one-way street from Begonia Street to Zastron Road;
  • Implement parallel parking bays along Langerman Avenue (between Arum Way and Begonia Street), Begonia Street and Graaff Avenue.

“A flyer was delivered last week to those residents in the immediate vicinity of the school. Residents are invited to make comments, recommendations and inputs on the proposed upgrade via email, telephone, in writing or online.

“This is a wonderful step in the right direction and residents can be assured, I have already started a similar process for Tygerhof Primary School,” says Ah-Sing.

In a statement by the City it stipulates the reasons for the proposed one-way conversions:

  • traffic circulation is an issue during peak periods with parked vehicles restricting two-way traffic flow around the school;
  • concern for the lack of formalised drop-off/pick-up facilities around the school;
  • poor traffic circulation due to informal on-street parking;
  • residents find it difficult to enter and exit their respective driveways.
