An overflowing sewer pipeline has left a Panorama resident’s backyard drenched in a stench.

Shantal Johansen, the resident, wrote in an email that her property in Piketberg Street is not the only house experiencing the problem. Neighbouring houses experienced the same fate earlier this month. The last overflow was on Tuesday, 2 May.

Johansen has complained with the City of Cape Town and the local ward councillor.

In her last email to Ward 1 councillor Cheryl Visser, she wrote that she is furious and that her children cannot play on the property.

“After 12 years of living on this island, we have been experiencing this constant hazardous mess. This is by now surely a known problem in your ward and nobody is permanently fixing it once and for all. It is always a constant investigation with cameras being inserted in the pipes to find fat, toilet paper or syringes etcetera.”

She asks to know when a permanent solution to the problem can be expected.

Johansen also attached a few photographs of the property underwater.

“My previous 80-year-old neighbour said that this has been continuing longer than 12 years.”

Johansen added that fats, oils and grease cannot be the reason for the overflow alone.

“The blame is constantly on everything but fixing the pipe.”

Visser in response forwarded the email to the relevant role-players at the municipality requesting more information as to the cause of the problem and for a more permanent solution to be implemented to resolve it.

TygerBurger is waiting on an official response from the City of Cape Town. The response will be added in a follow-up story.
