As Kraaifontein motorists continue daily to battle lawless taxi drivers on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Van Riebeeck Road, underspending in law enforcement overtime for Kraaifontein was reported in the City of Cape Town’s capital expenditure at a subcouncil 2 sitting on Wednesday.
Some R150 000 was allocated for overtime payment for law enforcement officers in Kraaifontein with a year to date spent of only 22,4%.
Ward 111 councillor Brenda Hansen requested City officials to report back with urgency as to why the money had not been spent. Hansen said she was aware of the problem at the above intersection, which is why she allocated more funds to augment under resourced law enforcement services specifically in Kraaifontein.
“We need help here. Money was given for oversight to police this intersection more regularly. I am aware of the difficulties experienced especially on the corner of Van Riebeeck and Ninth Avenue that has been addressed and although not sufficient, there has been an improvement here after recent law enforcement visibility,” she said. Motorist Hanlie van der Nest who uses the road every day told TygerBurger that law enforcement was at the intersection one morning last week, but that chaos ensued again the very next day.
“Taxi drivers do what they like and skip red robots with no regards for other motorists,” she said.
Hansen said she would be meeting with the safety and security department to discuss long term solutions at the intersection.
“Traffic or law enforcement can police the spot to fine taxi drivers today, and tomorrow the lawlessness continues,” she said.
