NPO’s message to kids a simple one: ‘Save water this Christmas’

Safe water and sanitation was the message of the day.

Over 114 000 tonnes of plastic end up in landfills, oceans and freshwater resources worldwide during the festive season, according to local non-profit-organisation (NPO) Save our Schools.

With the light shed on the heavy water footprint associated with Christmas and the impact it has on our water recourses the NPO on Thursday held a “Bare Tree” community event for underprivileged children in Kraaifontein, while at the same time sharing the joy of Christmas.

“The whole idea of the Bare Tree is too take an eco-friendly wooden Christmas tree and turn it into a decorated symbol of hope,” says the NPO’s Amy Burrow.

The Bare Tree event was held at Bophelo Educare in Kraaifontein and welcomed 200 young children from the five early childhood development centres the NPO supports.

“It was a heart-warming day of learning and gifting. Donations received from brands such as Sorbet, Pick n Pay, AGT Foods, Cosmetix, Superdry and Jeep ensured each child received a toy this Christmas season. We further spread the message of hope by placing five decorated Christmas trees within each early learning development centre,” she says.

CEO of Save Our Schools Shelley Humphreys says the NPO has focussed its work on improving access to and knowledge around water, sanitation and hygiene within the Kraaifontein area for the last four and a half years.

“As a non-profit organisation focused on assisting the youth of South Africa, we are proud to spread Christmas cheer with children in need this festive season.”
