A notorious gang-shooting alley in Scottsdene will soon be no more.

The alley on non-viable City of Cape Town land in Willie Crescent will be leased by the City to adjacent property owners, closed up and used exclusively for garden and security purposes.

The lease was approved in a sitting of subcouncil 2 at Kraaifontein municipal buildings last Wednesday.

Ward 7 councillor Grant Twigg supported the move saying this “alley of death” has been used by gangsters in the area as an escape route and to shoot and kill each other for years.

Twigg says gardening and security leases of municipal land to adjacent land owners give the public an opportunity to take responsibility for open spaces in their communities.

He encouraged others to do the same.

“Closing off and securing the alley will go a long way to safeguarding the surrounding property and community,” he says.

The lease will endure for a period of 10 years and a tariff rental of R1 130,42 per annum will be adjusted annually.
