Mnandi Beach in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, is set to become greener and more welcoming ahead of the summer season.

Francine Higham, Mayco member for community services and health at the City of Cape Town, said in a social media video on 13 August that she recently joined the City’s recreation and parks teams to help plant some of the 77 new trees at the beach.

The trees were sourced from Newlands Nursery and form part of the City’s Adopt-a-Tree programme. They will provide much-needed shade for visitors to the beach in years to come.

More than just trees

Tree planting is just one part of the ongoing upgrade. The work also includes paving pedestrian walkways, upgrading the beach’s toilet facilities, and adding bollards — short safety posts — to improve safety and protect public spaces.

Higham said the beaches are popular with residents from across Mitchells Plain and that the investment is about creating cleaner, greener and more accessible public spaces that families can enjoy for years to come.
