A brand-new fence has been installed on the Eskom reserve along Plattekloof Road and Giel Basson Drive near Bothasig.
“The fencing project came as part of maintenance activities required to reduce criminal activities in the area.
“This was agreed to with former Ward Councillor Helen Carstens and other interested and affected stakeholders such as the South African Police Service, neighbourhood watch and other law enforcement agencies,” says Kyle Cookson, Eskom spokesperson.
Contractors were on site three weeks ago.
“The existing fencing was no longer effective as a deterrent for illegal entry and use of the site. Furthermore, there were numerous incidents where fires originated from the site due to illegal occupation.
“Eskom had to prioritise the areas based on the risk of vagrants accessing the property and illegally squatting,” says Cookson.
He says there are plans to fence off the entire Plattekloof Natural Heritage Site. The site stretches from Tygerberg Hills, across Plattekloof Road near Welgelegen, Kleinbosch and cuts through parts of Edgemead towards the N1 highway. A section also runs parallel to Bothasig and Giel Basson Drive. The deadline for the project to fence off the site has been set for the end of December.
