Junk, knives, tools and sharp objects were but a few of the items found when scores of residents and officials from different security organisations descended on the flood plains on the road reserve adjacent to Stellenryk Park on Eversdal Road on Saturday.

The squatters living there have been a thorn in residents’ lives for years, with many burglaries blamed on street people who easily slip into the flood plains, often with loot in hand.

The Stellenberg Neighbourhood Watch (SNW) organised the operation and invited members of the Stellenberg community, law enforcement officials and security companies.

Around 45 people showed up to assist in the operation and three dogs were supplied by SJC security services, which were used to search for illegal substances. Jacques Rabe, chair of the SNW, said an estimated five temporary shelters and approximately 15 residents at the site were encountered.

“During the visit a young man was seen lying next to one of the shelters clearly under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he said.

“The group tried to engage with him, but after he remained unresponsive they left him to sleep it off.

“Another man was taken for further investigation by law enforcement. It was confirmed that he had some cases against him of which one had been withdrawn and another was pending a court date.” He was released.

Unhealthy living conditions

Rabe said there are a few reasons the security groups wished to visit the site.

“(We invited residents to) visit the area to familiarise themselves with the current situation at the site. And to gain an understanding of the level of ground and water pollution generated by this group, as well as to observe the general unhealthy conditions the people are living in.

“In addition, we were hoping to identify any sign of criminal activity,” he said.

Law Enforcement confiscated several sharp objects.

“A few jewellery items and also electronic equipment, such as DVD players and DStv decoders, were also found hidden among some of the rubbish on the site.”

Rabe said the group was grateful for the support they received on the day.
